It’s funny but as the sales coach and consultant it’s unusual that I sport a tie anymore in my Sales Training . And did you know what I don’t miss them a bit!

I was in fact reading through a vintage marketing ‘text book’ from the early 1990's just lately and was stuck by the Way that the tips has dated so much in barely ten years. I refuse to give the name of the book because for one it wouldn't be right and secondly it was one of the best selling book in the '90s.Some of the tips that were given with regard to dressing for success were:

‘Men’s suits must be solid blue or gray, pinstripe or chalk stripe or modest gray plaid. Made of wool or even polyester that appears similar to wool, is definitely ideal. The darker the suit, the more influence it carries, although black is funeral. Men’s tops and neckties are crucial. Usually, tops should be white or pale blue or just include modest stripes………The ages of the salesperson and the customer he will be facing may alter the selected attire. For sales person, considerably a lot more younger when compared with his customer, notably consumers above the age forty eight, it is better that a salesperson choose the high authority pattern of your dark suit along with a white-colored top.’

Incredible!

What detailed and distinct tips. Exactly what goes on to consumers at the age of 48? Could there really be a handful of recognized ‘experienced buyer menopause’ cycle that takes over? Do you reckon that maybe true in today’s ultra-modern business community?

Actually I don’t however I'd personally wish to hear your opinions. Actually I believe that you must get dressed appropriately for the occasions. And if you are at a sales situation you ought to take the time to figure out the perspective of the individual and company you're likely to come across.

Thinking this way remains to be relatively common. I was in fact at a celebration fairly recently and chatting away to somebody that mentioned:

"This event seems to be much better than the previous one I attended in London. It was brimming with scruffy gits, who actually couldn’t get dressed properly and none of them was sporting a suit!"

Watch out for taking a short sighted mind-set like this in todays contemporary business world. Many of the most wealthy, powerful, advanced thinking businessmen I've met will never ever dream of sporting a tie, never mind a suit. Some you wouldn’t step out of their flip-flops! However, if you've been trying to sell to this person (he was a Sales Manager) you would never get anywhere without a suit as a minimum. It’s not necessarily proper since all of us choose to think that we are judged on the value we deliver as opposed to appearances, however it still happens.

My own personal beliefs was greatly shaped during my teens in particular one situation when I went to purchase a vehicle. While I was 19, I have been blessed to be in a situation to go and buy a fresh Volkswagen Golf by means of the family business. Even though I was technically a college student at the time this was to be a ‘company car’. The problem was I dressed up like a student. And not a good one at that!

I remember wandering through a few showrooms while the sales staff simply just ignored me as if I was not even there. Of course, I looked scruffy however I practically had a cheque of £15,000 in my wallet to shell out. I never really found anyone to take an interest in me and had to push myself upon a salesperson when I got fed up of shopping around garages. I most certainly will always remember that lesson.

Be mindful whom you judge!

You shouldn't need presentations skills training to tell you this!. Should you be in sales then dress effectively. If uncertain you can’t go wrong with dressing up neatly or one way of putting it is to dress up how the people who advise your main possible buyer dress i.e their bank manager and financial advisor.
